Im in same situation, I work all day so only time I get to do work is during the evening and at weekends. My project is going to go on for at least six months. Any noisy work it do either at weekends or as soon as i get there. Anything after 7:30 i keep quiet. I know its very frustrating as you just want to get on with things but you still need to think if the shoe were on the other foot.

Personally, I would avoid doing too much noisy DIY after about 8pm. I would probably use a drill for something quick like a couple of holes for a curtain rail or something up until about 9.30, but extended noise that late would seem rude.

I think you should definitely go round and explain that you have small children. It only takes a little bit of planning to do the noisy jobs earlier and focus on things like painting/wallpapering etc later in the evening.

I've personally always seen it OK to be noisy up until 8pm any day. My neighbour has never complained and we get on well. However, if the work is on the party wall, or particularly noisy (for example using the angle grinder in the garden), I'd get this done much earlier. However sometimes you just need to get on with it.

Have a word with the neighbours and let them know you have two small children who are heading off to bed early, and please to keep the noise down. Chances are they can shuffle the jobs they're doing to get the louder stuff done early.

the rules for pro builders dont really apply to DIYers.
just have a word with them about the very loud noise after say 8pm. if you have young children.
but you must be realisitc too. they have just bought a new house and are doing it up on a budget.
i doubt the loud type noise will be every night for months on end?

i too have drilled a few masonary holes at 10 pm, but very rarely.
but i wouldnt use an angle grinder at 11pm!
    Get some gorm.
  • I definitely agree that it comes down to approaching them. If you just nip round for a chat it makes them aware that you have young kids to think about and it gives you an idea about how long it's going to go on for. It will be harder for them NOT to consider your family once you've made "friends". Unless they're really antisocial!! :)

Sorry but you might as well ban all DIY .

I work ( this is an example :D) all day , need to do up my first home.
I get home by six , quick meal , get the tools out .

    Great I have 15 mins , I can use a drill :eek::eek:

Sundays ... is a good day to do a big diy job .... but no noise ... please !!!

    Live in the real world.

Agreed! We don't start til about 11ish on a Saturday to give our neighbours time to have a decent lie-in!
  • we've has the exact situation on & off since we've lived in our semi we have done up a lot of our house & my hubby would ofetn use drills & noisy tools hammering etc, but i would always make him stop by 8pm for our children & of course the neighbours, our neighbours however arent as thoughtfull as we are though & when he installed a woodburner this winter he was often working after 10.30 pm very noisely & i went round to ask him politely to stop!

i certainly dont think after 8pm is unreasonable to ask for tools to be downed as you have children who have to sleep for school the next day & you to get up for work, how i wish i could live in a detatched house!!!
    good luck x
