I've had a gmail account for years now and it's been fine, except for this:
during the last 10 days I've received two emails addressed to a gmail address very similar to mine ! Any ideas, anyone?

Standard gmail feature.
For example if your email address is dora.the.explorer@gmail.com it will also respond perfectly to doratheexplorer@gmail.com as gmail ignores all the punctuation/separator characters in an email address.
They also forward to you any "near misses" so you will get dora.explorer@gmail.com, dora.the.exploder@gmail.com etc. (assuming these addresses aren't registered to somebody else). I think they are trying to be helpful by doing this.
Luckily most near misses tend to be by spammers and gmail's spam trap is very good indeed.

Thanks for the explanation Mike. Near misses sounds like the postie slinging the mail over the garden wall in the hope that it's for one of the adjacent houses ! The emails were certainly rubbish.0
