40th Wedding Anniversary Suprise Party - tips ?

Hi
It is my boyfriends parents 40th Anniversary in March.We have decided to give them a suprise party, with about 50 people and will probably have it in a local hall, as my house is too small and there is not a lot of places near here. We are also on a budget. ;D Now I have never done anything like this before so your tips would be very appreciated.I am not sure if to get caters in. Also about the decorating of the tables and hall. I was thinking red ( ruby)and cream/ white but dont really know where to begin( actually managed to sort out red, 40th balloons ;D and will get cake from COSTCO only £10 ). I will need table covers ,but eh wont that be expensive ? We dont really want to get his brothers involved as we had a party for his dads 60th and everyone started to argue. So there is me, him and my two pals. Eeek? Why did I think of this ??? HELP.....
