BT Rant - Help please!

Hoping someone can offer advice with this problem...

A year past in August I organised a new phone and Internet contract for my mum as I had just moved back into the country and moved in with her. Being MSE I listened carefully to the T&Cs explained on the phone - part of which involved keeping the contract for a year and, if you cut it short, you would have to pay remaining rental for phone and Internet. That was no problem as I was doing a post-grad course for the year and required the Internet so there was no way I was going to cut it short.

I moved out last July and my mum put the house up for sale (really no need for her to be living in a large 3 bedroom house when her kids have moved out). Anyways, she sold the house this month and has been getting in touch with utility companies to organise final bills etc.

BT stated that she will have to pay 65 pounds to disconnect as the contract AUTOMATICALLY rolls forward for another year from last August. They said they stated this on phone when contract was organised (they definitely didn't) and also claimed to have sent a letter (which mum never got). Mum said that if she did receive such a letter she would have contacted them as, at that point, the house was up for sale. BT basically said tough!

Mum told them to listen to the recorded call when the contract was taken out to prove we were not informed about automatic roll over - however the operator said it made no difference as she was sent the letter anyways!

Anyone know were we stand legally on this?

Is it not possible to transfere the contract to the new address & your mum take that phone number with her? Or is it that she doesn't want the Internet as well as the phone at her new address.
  • Thanks for your reply.

She's moving in with her sister who already has tel/Internet service with BT.

it might be worth your mothers sister dropping the internet and transferring it to your mothers name, but I think there might be a transfer fee as well.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
