What type of Screen to view XBox on?

My son wants to spend his own money on an XBox. Problem being is he does not have a TV or a screen to plug it into. What is the cheapest option for viewing Xbox on?

A TV? A computer screen? Certain level of spec?

Any advice given gratefully accepted.

Thanks!

try to find an old tv on freecycle
  • First answer: as cheap as possible.

Second answer: I would ask on Freecycle but I don't know what spec to ask for or what is too old to work (sockets at the back etc). Apparently 60Htz is needed in definition - whatever that means.

  • IMHO the xbox 360 is at it's best when connected to a tv / monitor with an HDMI cable.
If he gets a monitor then that is all it can be used for, where as a tv can be used as a tv also.
So ideally you son needs a HDTV with an HDMI connection, maybe a lesser known make will be cheaper.
  • Thanks for that - that is really useful info. TV would not work in his room though coz he would need an Aerial Connection to the the aerial on the roof.

    Thanks.

I agree with nomoreshoes - best quality will be through HDMI.

Having said that, the Xbox can be easily configured to display on pretty much any TV and if a monitor is preferred, then there's an official cable available with VGA connection. This option would also need something doing for the audio though.

    Do you have Sky?

Xbox 360 now has Sky Player so if you already have a Sky subscription, then this can be used at no extra cost.

  • i got an HDMI 22" flat screen for £120 new in December on the Argos Clearance shop on Ebay. Search for argos in seller field and you should find it. Does exactly what it says on the tin, full 1 year's warranty. You need to be quick if they still do them - they get snapped up quickly.

Daughter well chuffed, Xbox stunning with HDMI cable plugged in.
  • I play mine on a CRT monitor I obtained from FreeCycle. Image is perfect, cost me nothing except a little sweat carrying the thing through Cambridge.

    Brilliant replies - thanks.

I didn't consider needing audio with a computer screen. What do I do then? Buy speakers? Though some screens come with speakers.

To the poster above who bought an LCR from Freecycle - brilliant, but, er, what is a LCR?

  • LCR? No. CRT. As in: not flat screen.

And yeah, you just need a pair of speakers.
