Boxes for house move

Options
Hi.
I'm downsizing and need i) carboard boxes for the actual move ii) plastic storage boxes to go in my parent's loft/garage over the winter.

Can anyone suggest where i might get the above fairly cheap. I will of course be visiting tesco for there old boxes but I've also been looking at companies on the net who provide moving kits. Has anyone used these companies and kits before? Are they good value?

many thanks.

we got some off our removals firm, think it was 10 for £20. They were big and good quality. We will be able to re-use them for our next move.

Are you a member of freecycle?

    http://www.freecycle.org/display.php?region=United%20Kingdom

It's an email based group where you post an 'offer' or a 'want'. I've got rid of loads of stuff on here and also got some packing boxes for when I moved. On the group I'm a member of somebody put a wanted ad for packing boxes and a few days later posted another message saying Thankyou for all the offers - apparantly she was inundated.

I find these moving packs look good but when you see the actual size of the boxes they are always quite small.
Ask around at supermarkets and even the removal firms sell off their used ones sometimes for a few pence each.

Try some of your local schools/large companies to see if they are refreshing any of their IT equipment - Dell computer boxes are a great convenient size and a lot of companies are grateful for getting rid of them

removal boxes arnt ment to be huge as when they full they can be quite heavy

i got most of my removal boxes and bubble wrap by going into local factorys manily distribution factorys and asking if they had any boxes going spare.. they normally get there items in a bigger box that they throw out once opened and emptied..

go round to the loading bay they the ones that can help mostly

My friend used these people to get the packaging for their house move. Good range of sizes, very sturdy.

After their move, we then had all their boxes + tape gun for free :D

Got some bubble wrap from freecycle.

A different friend is now having the boxes for her house move.

BTW: did you know Argos now sell them?

McDonalds always have loads of boxes that they let you have if you ask.
They have lots of sizes but their Fries boxes are really good - not too big, not too small.

In the past going to my local supermarket and asking them to save their banana and apple boxes and lids have always allowed me to pack well - they normally tell you a time to come and collect which coincides with them unpacking as they will not store them for you due to fire risk/lack of space - it takes a few trips to collect them as you may only get 6 or 7 at a time but they are very substantial.

I bought from these guys. Good box packs!

  • I got a load of boxes that were for cleaning materials/paper towels/toilet rolls etc from work when the cleaners were unpacking the order. They are ideal as they are not too big but quite strong due to the weight of the items that are supplied in them.

Beware at Tescos - most of the boxes the provide are those that multipacks of crisps come in. Although big they are fairly flimsy so don't pack things of any weight in them.

I also have got a load from a friend that works in a nursing home that were used for delivery of bed mats/bed pans etc etc. Again, fairly strong boxes of a decent size that are not too big.

Good luck with the move.....at the rate my move is going you'll be settled before I actually get confirmation!
