Moving into partners home..

Hi!

After a long time of lurking I have decided to join up for some help! (I hope this is the right section to be in and I have searched before asking..).

Just some background..
Last October I moved into my partners home, with the view that we would use this time as a trial period (which has gone amazingly and we are very happy) with a view to move this year into a new place (fresh start etc!).

His lodgers have now moved out and we was planning to put his place up for sale in the next couple of months. However, after alot of discussions we have come to the conclusion that we are a million times better off staying put and using money we each have saved to give the house an overhaul and really make it home.

We are waiting to hear back on the costs of putting my name on the mortgage and deeds and will do this asap if the cost is not ridiculous, otherwise the plan is to wait until we have done downstairs up.

However, what I am unsure about is everything I need to change in order to "officially" live there. I previously lived at my parents house.

Obviously things such as phone bills, bank statements etc, and I know there will be some things I will need to have my parents and partner changed in regards to council tax.

I am really worried about missing something important and it biting me in the bum at a later date!

Would really appreciate any help given,

The key one to remember is getting on to the electoral roll! Your local council should be able to send out a form for you to complete to do this.

You should have been on the council tax from last October, they can and do check both physically and virtually so I would suggest you contact the council and backdate this. You do not need to be named on any other bills but you do need to registered to vote and to inform the inland revenue. Again bank statement should already have been changed - there is no such thing as an official address.

Is this really necessary - I am still registered at my parents address within same council?

Up until this point the only difference from when I was at home is that I stay there every night (rather than the 4-5 nights I was staying there previously anyway). I have made no contribution to the house in anyway until this point.

I understand you saying about there is no such thing as an official adress, hence my use of " " - all I meant by this was in terms of my mail etc being delivered here, rather than to my parents.

    Thanks

if you plan on using your new address for things like credit card applications, bank a/c or credit of any kind then its pretty esssential to put your name of the electoral roll -- why is this a problem for you.

It is a legal requirement to be registered for council tax at your correct address and a legal requirement for the head of household to complete the voting form correctly. If the council think you are trying to get a single person discount fraudulently you can be taken to court! If you don't believe me, ring the council. What contribution you make to the household has little bearing on the state's view of your home address - they look at things like where your belongings are stored, whether you shop and eat together.

No this is no issue at all for me, I am very keen to have it all sorted asap!

Sorry my reply wasn't that clear - I meant was backdating it to October necessary?

No, there is no need to back date anything unless your OH was claiming 25% council tax discount for single person occupancy

and best wishes for the future

It's no more effort: why would you want to avoid this? You are liable for council tax at your home address and must be registered in the correct place for the correct dates. I recently had a change to my circumstances, and my council advised me it was necessary to backdate it. This is because the money paid in must be paid to the correct account - you will have a 'new' account opened in your joint names and the old one will be closed.

Great thank you - he was/is not receiving this discount. (I am in no way trying to dodge anything and have posted for help as I want to insure I am doing it all by the book!).

I am correct in thinking the electoral roll and being registered for council tax at the address are two seperate things?

    Many thanks!

this is simply not the case

council tax bill is not addressed to all the people in a household; the only significant issue is whether you are claiming the 25% discount

just because one is on the electoral roll it doesn't mean the council tax will be in your name
I very much doubt the OPs name is on the council tax bill at her parents address even though everyone in the household is jointly and severally responsible for its payment

You haven't give the details of your specific situation so there may have been particular reasons for their advice
