    Hi,

I brought a few strawberry plants from wilko's, three in a plastic bag for £1.99. I have repoted these and have put them on my kitchen window sill, should I put these outside or wait for the warmer weather??

    Thanks in advance
    Tracey

Put them outside - if possible cover with fleece until they get acclimatised.

Depends on the variety and quality of the plants. A lot of these plants you get very cheap never do well. Strawbs might bear v. little fruit for instance (esp. in the first year). Having gardened for years, I never buy plants from Wilkos or Aldi. Not saying you can't ever get a bargain, but nothing I've bought from either of these places has ever done well (if they've grown at all).

We bought some aldi strawberries and some lidl ones. There was a mix of varieties but nice and cheap. Got a few fruit the first year, loads more the second.
This is the third year and by letting some grow runners I have the orginal 3rd year plants in a bed with second yr and first year plants. So a whole bedfull (at least 30 plants) for about £3 altogether :j.

I have found with the cheaper plants you need more patience eg fruit bushes and trees are sold at younger ages than a nursery might sell them. But for me the money saved was worth waiting. I would also say watch the websites and forums like this and buy the plants quickly after they are first stocked as some stores are better at looking after them on the shelves than others.

I suppose its how much you can afford to pay and if you want instant results

    Thank ali,

£1.99 is all I could afford at the time, so guess I will have to be patient.

Thanks everyone for your help & advise.

I have been putting the plants outside during the day & bringing them in late evening, they seem to be ok.

    thanks

When they get going dont forget to make new plants with the runners. You put the new ones in a separate pot and leave the trailing bit still attached to the original plant until the new one has rooted. I think I read somewhere last year that strawberry plants should be replaced every three years or so, not sure though. The others will say if I am wrong.
