Beef or red meat I would sniff, but chicken and fish I am more cautious of. One day maybe, but 4 probably not.

If it's fruit or chocolate etc then use by dates are second to me having a good smell and feel.

But when it comes meat & chicken... Don't take any risks - Food poisoningis not cool

Fruit and chocolate will normally be labelled with a Best Before Date or Display Until date rather than a Use By which is normally used on high risk foodstuffs (which will support bacterial growth and run the risk of making you ill)

But like others have said, 4 days over the date is a while for chicken. We had steak tonight that was a day over the date, but it looked and smelled fine :)
