I'm trying to use Media Player and there is no sound. Speakers plugged in and turned on. Volume control shows as on and up. How do I check that Windows Media Player is set as the default player?

Go into the main Windows volume control:
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control
and check that none of the "Mute" check boxes are ticked. If they are, untick them and see if that fixes it. It's happened to me a few times...0 -
Thanks for that, but I had already checked the volume. What I need to check now is that Window Media Player is set as the default player as I also have Real Player. I cannot remember how to check it!0

If Nicks suggestion doesn't work...
Do you get any Windows sounds when you boot up? Just to check whether it's the player software settings, or the PC itself.
Sounds very patronising (sorry) but ensure the speakers are plugged into the green spkr hole not the pink mic one (I've seen it done many a time)
Try playing through a different media player, like Real Player perhaps?
For default players: Start>All Programs>Set program access and defaults, it will show the media players available, and which is default.

Thanks very much. Still no sound, but I'll get down behind the desk and scrabble in the dusty spaghetti junction area. Will have to do that later! Will also check out the re-boot scenario.
Your help is much appreciated.0 -
I would uninstall real player as its quite a poor bit of software now once that has been uninstalled I would check that you have not got a missing sound driver
Start
(right click) My Computer
Properties
Hardware Tab
Device Manager
Now see if any red or yellow exclamation marks or question marks are vivsible next to your sound game and video controllers if their is it means you will need to reinstall your sound drivers
I would use this tool you will have to download and install http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php click under where it says Latest Version (Top Left) once installed and up and running click on the speaker icon to see what driver you need then you can download the driver off the net or reinstall if you have it on a disc that came with the PC0 -
Had this problem recently, Sandi, I had , in a fit of enthusiasm for speed, unticked the sound box in 'advanced' on Internet Option IE. Was drunk at the time.Jack Daniels.0

No unticked sound boxes and no driver exclamation marks.
Plugs plugged into CPU in correct coloured sockets.
I installed Real Player so that I could listen to the Beeb! Now it seems that Boob is more the operative word.
Thanks again for your help!0 -
I myself dont use ral player its self but I use something called real alternative as it does the same job but not so bloated as real player and is less icky
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm thats the link for real alternative I would uninstall real player first0 -
