When I last taxed online, the disc arrived two days later. Technically you could be penalised for not displaying a disc but it's unlikely!

Oops I thanked you instead of quoting you.

Please note that your last line is misleading. It is an offence to drive a vehicle without displaying a valid tax disc and if you get caught you will be penalised unless you can talk your way out of it which you won't do where I live.

In addition to the police being hot on this one, so are the local council. They clamp and then remove untaxed vehicles from the street, so in my borough you can end up with a double whammy.

In some areas the police have introduced zero tolerance and if you are stopped whilst driving a car that is untaxed, they will having it taken away there and then.

Agreed it is an offence not to display but I would not pay a fee of £7.50 for a cover note to be sent out and then have to go to the Post Office to tax it! In my case I applied online Tuesday lunch time and the disc arrived Thursday morning, so I was unable to display for one and a half days.

A charge of £2.50 is payable if you use a credit card on line (debit card ok). Also,my ins ran out on Jun 29 and I had arranged for the new ins to start on June 30 with a different company. The on line site refused to process my application saying that I had no insurance. So I had to go to the post office anyway.

Guess which two days of the month our local council pick up truck is out and about the most.

I did a search and think this is the nearest thread to a problem we have.
If you trade in your current car at a dealers, how do you get a tax disc from the post office?
This happened last time as well, so its not a new problem.

The dealer wants an insurance certificate or cover note for the new car - so that he can buy a tax disc and we can then pick up a legal, taxed and insured car.

The post office will only accept an original insurance document - and the dealer is not registered to tax online for 2nd hand cars.

The insurance company (we're in mid-year so it will cost to change) will only send the new document by post to our address and say it will take at least 5 days - past experience has taught us its nearer 10-12 days! And that's only once the date of sale and changeover has been agreed and notified to them. Obviously, the dealer wants to make the sale as fast as possible - and so do we.

    **??expletive deleted??**! the regulations.

Is there any alternative (that's legal)?

The dealer should be taxing the car on his own insurance. We have never had a problem with this. Where tax was not included in the purchase price, we simply paid the extra for the tax and the dealer got it. We have never been asked to provide proof of other insurance cover.

We used to do it this way, but since last July (when I changed cars), this hasn't worked. Now my OH wants to upgrade cars, same problem.

I think it is burbs who is a member on here that is a car dealer. You could pm him and see if he has any advice or can explain why the dealer may not be playing ball. He might also be able to help you find a way round it.
