Alliance & Leicester have suddenly started charging me a monthly fee with no warning. I haven't used the account for a few years and when I opened it they never said I would be charged. Now they've sent me letter saying I owe them almost £400! What can i do?

I know they charge 50p per day upto a maximum of £5 a month if you go onto your overdraft. Are you overdrawn in your account?
But just give them a call to find outComping again0 -
My deepest sympathy. I'm experiencing the same problem, only to the tune of £155 though.
Apparently they charge £5 for every month that you don't pay money into the account. They don't even notify you of this until you exceed your overdraft limit. I was lucky in that they cancelled my overdraft soonish & wrote to tell me I was overdrawn which was the first I knew of it, since I'd left a credit balance in the account. Of course once you're into unauthorised overdraft there's a whole new fun packed array of charges to hit you with.
They are horrendous to deal with on the phone. For ages after I initially complained they 'put it on hold' due to the bank charges case, as of today I've a letter demanding payment, they aren't even able to tell me what the charges are as they've been 'archived' (I've summised from a few angry phone conversations) so I've got to call yet again.
