What to grow in pots/not much space?

  • I have found containers are the bst way to grow carrots - helps keep the carrot fly at bay too as they are higher up. Also Tomatoes, strawberries both also do well in hanging containers as previously mentioned. Broad beans do OK in containers, herbs definately, peas and sweet peas - growing sweet peas is great as they need cutting daily to keep flowering, but they make a good gift and barter item. I have also grown courgettes in a large container. In many ways container gardeining is easier and cleaner than traditional methods.

Look out for the gardening magazines this time of year with free seeds on the cover, if you would buy the seeds any way it is a great way to get seeds and advise, they also often have offers where you can send off for other seeds at p&p only , which works out very good value.
  • Dwarf beans grow well in containers.

Very easy to grow, pretty flowers and would be fun to harvest for your child as the beans hide behind the leaves :)

We have a lot of containers mainly because I find it easier to control them. My son brought round an olive tree growing in a ontainer as he was neglecting it but with my tender care:cool: it is now at least twice the original size. Trouble is, with some of these things, like a Gingko and a an Acer Palmatum is that we have had to put them in bigger pots as times has gone on. I am not very good with veg but do grow chillies and tomatoes in the greenhouse using pots from Morrisons; the ones flowers were in.

It's a great hobby so good luck to you and may you have wonderful results.

    Thanks for responses so far.
I got my Morissons Flower pots today 16 medium & 16 large they where the last ones on the shelf & walking round 3 sets of people asked me where had i got them from in the shop!. Then i was concious of leaving the trolly incase they where swooped! ( they are only flower pots i hear you say) but they seemed like golddust in there today. One woman had trailed 4 Morissons stores to find them so i started to feel guilty when my 4yr old said i should SHARE THEM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I think from reading this thread they are going to get very popular & everyones hot on the trail now, between us we are keeping Morissons in business! ha!

I don't know if I should feel guilty here, I thought it was just me with a bucket addiction now look what I have done to you, we have quite a few buckets left in our local stores so tell them to come down here, I have bought more myself this week and now my OH won't let me buy anymore, (if you get bored look on ebay, last time I looked someone was selling the same buckets for £5 for 10, you can now gloat knowing how much money you saved, if you go into b&Q you will see a similar sized pot for £2.72 each then you know your a bucket genius)
