Maximum number of car insurance policies?

Does anyone know if one driver is allowed more than one car insurance policy?

My son has recently passed his driving test and we want to insure him under my name on a small car, while retaining my existing policy on an estate.

I will also be driving the small car, as the estate is for business use, so can I have one policy for the small car and a different one for the estate, and if I can, do I have to have both cars with the same insurer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Matt

As long as there isnt more than 1 policy on a vehicle an individual can be insured to drive as many vehicles as they want with as many different insurers as they want

  • Thanks for the reply, I have one more question:

Can I use my no claims discount on both cars?

    Thanks

No, a no claims discount is for a single policy - so you can only use it on one but if you have multiple vehicles you can earn seperate NCDs for them.

There are options to have multiple vehicles associated together either in a true fleet policy or in a more bespoke multi car discount like Direct Line offer which will not be the same as having a full NCD on every vehicle but could work out better than having a number of vehicles on 0 or intro only discounts

There is a way to get your NCD for the second car as i did this a few years ago.

On car 1 we had full ncd.
Upon acquiring car 2 we were able to get second car discount and honour the full NCD onto the second car and providing we didnt claim on car 2 then the full ncd would be available in full on both cars (if we did claim on car 2 however our ncs would revert to nil)

This was with priv direct and therefore presume counts on all RBSI companies, ie tesco, direct line, churchill, uki - aka vauxhall, peugeot, renault, bmw etc etc
