Recommendations for new external hard drive, please!

Hi guys,

I officially have the worst luck with technology, ever. After catching my foot in the cable between my laptop and my seagate external hard rive, which resulted in the latter hitting the ground and breaking, I was then using a sata drive and old hard drive to do the same back up I had been trying to do, only to catch one of the linking cables with my foot again, crashing and breaking that. :doh:

Yes, I feel like a fool, yes, I really need a replacement and no, it seems that I can't remove my foot and beat myself to death with it. Instead, do any of you nice techie people have any recommendations for good external hard drives of the more durable variety? (I know that if you drop it while it's working only so much can be done, but still....). I was looking at some of the lying-down ones as opposed to the standy-up ones, which are the ones I currently have, that fall over easily, and need burying.

As you can get 1TB for under £100 it would seem daft to go for anything less. £100 would be my limit though, being as I am bedrock broke and then some.

I bought a 500gb one from Argos (about £50) over a year ago and it has been excellent but I guess that's because I can't catch my foot in the cables !!!!!

Cheers, busenbust - I really appreciate the advice. :beer: I had seen reviews of them online, but given my current bad luck with hard drives, I'm just paranoid!

I've seen an Iomega aluminuim-covered external. Do you think it would realistically offer me any extra protection worth the extra price, or do you think it would be just a pretty extra?

The eGo Portables have had some excellent reviews; I'm thinking of purchasing one myself; you can still choose any color and buy the rubber band protective strap separately I think.

I got a 1.5TB Iomega Prestige from John Lewis - was about £65 a month or two back - it has been excellent - check out the reviews on amazon.com

One of my friends has a Western Digital Mybook 500gb which he never stops raving about how good it is.

PC world have these on their site, 1TB is £70.

Me personally though, I don't know what I could possibly store on such a crazy amount of space!
