unknown gas supplier

Options
just after some advice about what sort of bill I might expect and how I can check if this is correct.

I moved into a new property in September '09 and the gas meter reading was 7320. There was no supplier (despite numerous calls no one was willing to admit ownership). I changed supplier (despite not having a supplier!) in November and from December EDF started supplying gas. The meter reading when EDF took over was 7384.

EDF seem to have established n power were previous supplier (they denied this when I phoned them last year) although this is under some dispute between the two companies. Basically until someone closes the account, EDF can't open their account.

Assuming this happens n-power will no doubt send me a final bill. I'd be amazed if they use the right meter readings but once we establish the correct readings how will I know they're not ripping me off?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi yorkyboy1976 - So far as your eventual billing is concerned you are doing the right thing in logging your meter readings, but over time tariffs change and to accept or challange any bill when you get one - Keep a weekly diary of your meter's readings.

The usual reason for a supplier to block a Switch is debt on the account, which if there is, is obviously not yours. But when N'power/Edf manage to get thier act together, you will have to prove that you are a new occupant and the meter readings at that time - so keep a file with this information.

As soon as possible WRITE a joint letter to both n'power and EDF setting out the date of your occupancy and the meter readings in your post, pointing out that but for the dispute between the two companies, which is not any fault of yours, you would elect to go onto the lowest tariff for your use with whatever comany they decide you are with, that you would pay by Direct Debit and when you eventually do get a bill, you expect it to be calculated on that basis
    Good Luck

How to identify your gas supplier

Yes you will probably be billed for what you have already consumed ... and yes they will 'probably rip you off'. This is beacuse, as you failed to set up an account with them and opt for a more beneficial tariff, they will charge you based on their standard tariff which is usually the most expensive.

  • Thanks for the replies. All in all it's pretty annoying because I've ended up doing all the donkey work - at least 10 phones calls this year (which includes a 28 day rest whilst EDF processed, well, nothing!) - and I know I'll get stung at the end.
  • Sounds pretty similar to what happened to me. 4 years ago i moved into a new build property and BG were supplying gas and electric, but they denied they were suplying the electric. I was receiving gas bills but no electric. After numerous phone calls to them they admitted that yes they did actually supply the electric too, and would send me a bill. More phone calls later ( i logged every call and who i spoke too) i still wasnt recieving bills. Finally after 18 months i received a red letter for around £800!!! I was furious and BG would not help in the slightest, they just set up a payment plan for me to pay it back. I got in touch with a company online ( i think they were called energy watch) and they were fantastic! They contacted BG on my behalf and low and behold, after 2 days BG phoned to appologise and said that they are infact only allowed to bill me for the the previous 12 months. So i got a couple of hundred quid knocked off the bill there and then. They also set the payment plan up for me to to be able to pay it back over 18 months, which reduced my monthly payments by alot. I am now debt free with BG, and actually was in credit with my last bill :-)
