Where to get Passat wheel bearing replaced

Options
Never had to have a wheel bearing before, but I'm pretty sure I need one now! Is this best done at a main stealer or should I visit one of the many local tyre emporiums (?emporia) who claim to do bearings? I'm not in a position to do it myself....

True enough - it is the second time this one has gone (nearside front) in 60,000 miles....

I've replaced wheel bearings on every brand car I've ever owned. They wear out; that's the way it works.

    Local back street garage job.

Go to a local independent garage and get a quote, don't use Kwik Fit or similar they are likely to find a lot more wrong than a wheel bearing

Where are you thinking of going, as someone on here may be able to recommend a good garage, however as we haven't yet mastered telepathy, a location may be useful.
That's my mutt in the picture above.

    Vauxhall Astra MK2 1.3, Astra MK2 2.0 GTE, BMW E30, Golf Mk3
I drove them all hard, lots of cornering and eventually one of them would start rumbling so then I'd change the pair.

It's not a design fault if a wheel bearing wears out. They have a hard life and only a bit of grease to lubricate them.

If the design is similar to the VW Polo rear drums they're quite easy to DIY, you just need to be sure you adjust them properly and check the adjustment again after 50 miles or so.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm near Reigate in Surrey if anyone knows of a good local garage. The nearest main dealer is in Crawley and they have just built a new glass and steel premises that is more like a hospital than a garage - so they must be making shedloads of money!
