Hi firefox nobody said that cats protection is a bottomless pit but they would rather help with neutering than see another load of kittens. Maybe you need to think before you post as it comes across as being aggressive.

  • When I got my kitten from an independent rescue they charged me 50 for her but said that they would refund me 25 of this when I had her spayed. She's now had the op but I haven't claimed the money back as I"d sooner they used it on helping other cats/kittens in need. Are there any other independent cat rescues in your area who might also provide help with the cost of spaying etc, it might be worth ringing round to check and also contacting the organisation you got her from to see if they would be willing to make a contribution towards the cost.

I had credited you with more intelligence than a Daily Mail half-truth. CP HQ provide some funding for neutering in the form of a grant which individual branches top up through fundraising. The more resources that used for neutering the less there is for rescue, veterinary treatment and the costs of fostering.

Then it has changed a lot FF. The actual neutering voucher scheme WAS wholly paid for by HQ, and they just issued a certain number of vouchers per area. No top-up was necessary, the rest of the cost should be met by the cat owner, however groups generally would top-up costs for some people where they thought that was justifiable.

I do not believe that this has actually changed, as my friend still works closely with CPL and the vouchers are still centrally issued.

  • vets are not cheap - it takes longer to qualify to become one than a human doctor.

Look on spaying cost as an investment - however shopping around won't do any harm.

It doesn't take longer to qualify as vet than a doctor. Vet school is 5 years everywhere bar cambridge, and you are then fully qualified and can work. Medicine is also 5 years, but then a complusory 2 year junior doctor stint=so 7 years to qualification. Is a very common misunderstanding though :)

Regarding the spaying-CPL vouchers for people on a low income are there to be used. They do come from head office. No problem shopping around-but be aware different practices have different standards. I have worked in a very cheap "neutering clinic" type practice, and I was not allowed give any cats pain relief for neutering, whereas now, we charge about £50ish for a spay, and they get good anaesthesia, and pain relief. So do your homework-cheap is not necc best!

But I do agree with some other posters-in that if the £40-60 ish for spaying is not possible-please get your pet insured or register with the pdsa, so if they are hurt/ill you dont have to worry about the BIG vets bills (xrays with sedation you are really looking at a minimum of £100-150. Broken legs that need surgery £400-2000!)

If you cannot afford to neuter a kitten yourself then do not adopt one, take on an adult cat or no cat at all. The OP will have signed an agreement that SHE will get the rescue kitten neutered not Cats Protection.

Different coloured vouchers are issued by CP HQ and by individual branches, it may be the branch your friend supports does not have the funds to top this up at all. A certain number of vouchers per area = CP is not a bottomless pit of cash. Pop over to Purrs forums as this is where I am getting my information.
