Dispute with Barclays

Hey
I opened an account with Barclays back in March last year with a £500 overdraft come June I went into the branch and asked if it would be possible if I could increase my overdraft I sat with someone from the branch they applied for it and said it was succesful and my overdraft was now £700. The balance of my account at the time was -£500 so there was no available funds, about 3 days later i went into a branch to withdraw money as I did not have a cashcard at the time and i withdrew £180 thinking that the overdraft had been increased.
It wasnt increased despite them telling me it had been, since then I have lost my job and the balance on my account is -£680 and I am recieving constant letters from them demanding payment, I have contacted the branch and since they have said that my oversraft cannot be increased from the £500 despite me being told that day that it could be increased!
Were do i stand with this - is it not there mistake for accepting to an increased overdraft when it couldnt happen and why did they allow me to withdraw £180 when there was 0 funds available and they have since gave me charges also.
The account his since been frozen I understand I should have checked my balance before taking out the money but i did not have a cashcard at the time and assumed that if they were giving me £180 over the counter then the overdraft must have been increased
Anyone got any ideas
thanks!

I've been here before - go into your branch and ask to speak with the Manager - then point out that they allowed you to make an over the counter withdrawal knowing that this would bust your limit of 500 pounds and that they should have refused this unauthorized borrowing (unauthorized overdraft facility) - their mistake.Disclaimer - Info about the law is designed to help users safely cope with their own legal needs.
