Should I install Java on my XP Laptop - Any Tweaks?

Hello.
I was wondering if anyone here had problems with Java on my laptop? My only reason for installing it as some of the software I occasionally use requires it, and also my online mail client works best with it, but I've heard that it can really slow down your machine, but also that there are some tweaks that can speed it up. I just want to have it there, have it do its job when needed and if possible not interfere with performance the rest of the time.
My laptop runs Windows XP Home and I'd be installing the latest Java version off the sun website.
Cheers and take care.
Hussein.

- have i had any problems with java on your laptop? no.
- i have heard of people having a couple of trojans and things getting in through java, but these were picked up instantly by AVG free (grisoft.com if you dont have it, its great)
- you should have it as an increasingly large number of websites and applications use java
- slow down your machine? not unless your machine is quite old. LIES.
- any tweaks will probably cause more problems as they are not released by Sun.
hope this helps.0 -
Thanks for that. I guess the stories of slowdowns resulted from the applications handling and use of the java engine, not the java itself.
Cheers and take care.
