Clubcard points versus cheap(er) petrol

Options
Hope someone out there is cleverer than me (not difficult) and can work this out.
I have a Tesco credit/clubcard which I use use when buying my petrol from Tesco. Current price per litre of petrol at Tesco is 111.9p. This gives me (I believe) 2 points per pound(?) and 1 point for every £2 spent on my credit card. But the local Shell garage charges 109.9p per litre.
Am I better to pay more at Tesco and accumulate points or go to the Shell garage and save on the difference? What would the differential between the two need to be before one was more cost effective than the other? If it helps in working it out I spend approx. £100.00 a month on petrol.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I can answer one part of this question; the double clubcard points do not apply to fuel purchases.

A Tesco clubcard point is worth 1p I believe & given this it's basic maths to work out which is better ;)

    Hi

You get 1 point per £1 spent at the pump (normal clubcard point) plus 1 point for every £4 for spending on the credit card. So if you are spending £100 at Tescos petrol pump per month you are earning £1.25 in Tesco points on your credit card

If you used your Tesco credit card at the Shell Garage you would earn £0.25 for every £100 spent but you'd be saving real money - sometimes 2p per litre.

Assuming that for your £100 you get around 90 litres then at Tescos based on 111.9 per litre you would spend £100.71 and earn £1.25 in points = £99.46. If you bought 90 litres from Shell at 109.9 then you would spend £98.91 and earn £0.25 in points = £98.66.

Maths isn't my forte either but I think this is right. I've the same in my area - Shell is now always one or more pennies cheaper - I choose Shell even if its just 1p cheaper. Clubcard vouchers can always be lost and actual cash is better.

Shell station here is 2p cheaper than Tesco. In January it was 5p cheaper.

1 clubcard point translates to 4p in deals, so it may not be cheaper to fill up elsewhere, then again there's no guarantee that clubcard deals will stick around at the current exchange rate.

I also seem to get better mpg from Shell fuel although I'm aware there's a lot of debate around that issue.
  • Tesco are currently giving the 5p off per litre when you spend £50.00 or more in their shops/online food orders.

With that 5p off per litre, its a no brainer, however at normal price I would opt for the Shell if its 2p per litre cheaper.

    Tally
  • Thank you all for your help. I think I will opt for Shell as it is on my route to work and Tesco is a bit out of the way but I can sometimes justify that if I have to buy something in store.
It was more the different ways of Tesco have of toting up Clubcard points against real money saved at the pump that I was unsure about.
I hope this helps someone else.
