As is always happening I found this item somewhere on MSE and now I can't find it again!
I've downloaded CuteWriter and Converter as suggested by somebody but I don't know where to go from here! I often get files sent to me with e-mails (photos and jokey things usually) and I often get the the message that the file name is not recognised - or something similar.
For instance, right now I have an attachment to an incoming e-mail (trusted source) with the suffix .pps that I can't open. Would some kind person spell out (not too technical please) what I should do! I was hoping that if I could convert them all to pdf, I would cease to have problems.
I would be grateful.

yet another case of... if you'd googled it you could have found out instantly.
a quick search of 'file extensions':
http://filext.com/
and:
http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=pps
although i figure mot people would have realised... PPS = MS Powerpoint Presentation.0 -
.pps files are Microsoft PowerPoint. You can download the free PowerPoint Viewer to view them.
.pdf files are a portable document format, meaning any computer (Windows, Mac, Linux etc.) with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader can view them. Since they can't be edited easily they are a good way of sending important documents to people knowning that they can't be altered.
Cute PDF Writer allows you to create .pdf files from any existing documents (email, Word docs etc.). You do it by clicking File - Print... in the application and choosing the Cute PDF 'printer', which then 'prints' the document to a file. Any document which can be printed can therefore also be converted to a pdf file in this way.0 -
Thanks both! I'll give it a try tomorrow - it's a bit late to be tangling with something new (to me anyway!)
