Had offer accepted on a house, but they wont take off the market

I said just this in various clarifying ways on the below thread over the weekend, and got torn to pieces by various ‘buyers’.
I still believe it’s the right way to handle an offer though. An agent I talked to yesterday told me he had a viewer currently offering on four properties, a sort of house roulette, playing them off against each other…
Thanks all for the replies, i can understand from the seller's point of view. We have had in writing from the estate agent that our offer has been accepted, does this change anything ?0 -

Nope. Until you've accepted an offer on your place you cannot expect them to take their property off the market. This is the problem with viewing and offering without being in a position to proceed. The confirmation you have received means that their property is now 'under offer' subject to contract. You cannot do the subject to contract bit until you've sold up or unless you can find the money from elsewhere. So, someone could come along who's currently in rented or in a better position than you are to complete. Sorry, this is just how it is. Potential strategies include dropping the price of yours, but you're in danger here of becoming too desperate and accepting offers that put you in an awkward position financially. Sell sell sell.0 -
We had a non-proceedable person offering like crazy on ours, getting right up to asking. I said their offer was acceptable but I could not actually accept it. They then took weeks to get their house on the market and hugely overpriced it. It went nowhere in the end.
I’m surprised that a seller would accept in your position, but I presume you realise that offers and acceptances are not firm commitments to anything by any measure?
I hope it works out for you – you never know - but things really have to be done in the right order.0 -

Sure thing, many thanks, I guess we will have to sell soon I hope, many thanks for your help0 -
Personally i wouldnt take mine off the market until yours was under offer, otherwise how would they know that you're a serious buyer? serious buyers are ready and commited to the move - they usually already have theirs under offer before offering on another.
My advice would be to do anything you can to sell your house quickly, keep a firm interest at the estate agents so its at the front of their minds as much as possible (even annoy them seeking daily updates so they want to get rid of it to get rid of you! - does work).
You could look at it this way too: if you do get gazumped you havent invested any money into the process at this point.MFW - <£90kAll other debts cleared thanks to the knowledge gained from this wonderful website and its users!0
