Gas refund

My meter is not allowing me to top up. Card error 38.

I need to buy a new card at £8.00 plus put gas on it. Then send my old card to British Gas and they refund the £8.00 plus the amount I tried to top up with.

Does anybody know how long it takes for this refund? I am dreading placing a new card in the meter. As I have a strange feeling that it will wipe months of phone calls to BG in respect of the wrong tariffs I had, alongside mess with the amount I owe to debt.

Before you spend money on a new card, have you tried a few simple steps?
Wipe the card & chip with a damp (not wet) cloth; try the card the wrong way round then back again (I know, but I've been surprised by how often it works.).

If you buy a card from a shop, it has no prices or anything on it - it'll pick all that up from your meter. As such you can't top up on it until it has been in your meter. I'd also send back (?a copy of) the receipt from buying the new card with your old one, just to be sure.

    Hope everything works out OK,

    (PS I work for BG)

Edit: almost forgot to answer the question. From posting the card, through it getting checked, then the details to the agents, then them sending a message out to the shops, to your meter, could take 3-4 weeks.
