Find a tradesman

Hello

I'm new to the forum thing and was wondering if anyone knew of a decent place to get tradesmen. I need a quote for an extension and i've been to myhorror (MyHammer), service magic and a couple of others but the quality of the tradesmen that have responded is a bit poo!:(

I'm looking for tradesmen that have been checked out and wont over charge (obviously). Can you share any experiences.

    ask family, friends or neighbours.
any other method is fraught with danger.
keep away from the yellow pages and online builders sites the pretend to be "helping the consumer".
    Get some gorm.

Good advice, also look at other house's near you who have had extensions. And knock and ask who built them and were they happy with the builders. Also it a good way to get to know your neighbours.

Some local authorities run a list of approved tradesmen. Try calling your local council. Building control may be your fiorst port of call. It may also help if you draw up a specification of what you want done so that any prospective builders give like for like quotes. Beware of any body that offers you a 'deal for cash' and agree a payment schedule. Don't be afraid to ask for references or to see examples of previous work. If the builder is kosher, this won't be a problem to him.

Ormus, I don't necessarily agree about Yellow Pages. I advertise in YP and it is an expensive medium in which to advertise and therefore because of its expense, tends to weed out the smaller operators and the fly by nights. The companies advertising in YP tend to be more established and therefore more financially stable. I agree entirely about web sites though. I'm always geteting call from website based companies and their opening line is always "We are looking for a local reputable company and have chosen you..." they don't know me from adam and when I turn them down they will go on to the next company with the same opening line!
