Announcements on London trains?

A friend of mine is taking to the football on Tuesday. In order to get there, I have to take a tube and then an overground train. I am ok with travelling on the tube (as long as I take the right one..) but am worried about travelling on the train.

The place we're going to, I am unfamiliar with. He has said that we may need to go our separate ways first and meet up somewhere. Whilst this is fine, I am worried about knowing where to get off on the train.

I have been told how to get there; it's just being to get there without any problems and me panicking that I've gone the wrong way.

My question is, on the tubes, they have announcements as to what station we're at, the line, where the tube goes, etc. Is there the same thing on the overground trains?

Tube - yes there are automated announcements.

'Overground' - depends what you mean by 'overground', but in general announcements are manual and may or may not occur. Could well depend on the line.

    Stations do have nameboards though.
  • i wanted to know which station my train stopped at between edinburgh and manchester and went onto national rail enquiries website and there was a section there that tells you where the trains stop - might be worth a look

My sight is pretty limited and they don't always make announcements on the tubes or the trains (usualy but not always I have been on more than one tube train with no announcements). So I check the rout before I leave and then if I have to I count the stops.

  • All new trains (c.5-6 years old) have GPS fitted digital displays which automatically announce the stations. It's a requirement under the DDA. Whether they work is another matter though. And whether or not you get a new train.

Hsd a chat with him this evening. He said that I would have to get the tube myself (no problem) and we'll meet at the train station.
