Vacuum cleaners do I need to spend a lot

I need to buy a vacuum cleaner as I don't have one and just keep borrowing my brothers.
They vary so much in price though, I don't want to spend a lot but I do want one that works. I don't have very much carpet at all nor am I inclined to so much in the way of vaccuming.
Any ideas, recommendations or things to avoid?

I'd say get the best you can afford and go for something durable and reliable. Even if the initial outlay is more, it's the cost per year that counts.
I'd recommend a Henry which can be bought for less than £100, they last for years so work out very cheap in the long run.
I'd avoid gadgets and gizmos and get something well built.
I did have a Dyson once and wouldn't recommend them although I know some people love them.0 -
Google Bissell Direct and have a look at their reconditioned machines. I got a reconditioned Lift Off last year for £59 delivered and it's brilliant0

You don't need to spend a lot. We don't have much carpet either and we're not into making the house beautiful. But I don't like spending my money on frequently replacing boring appliances, so we bought a Miele. You can get a basic one for about £100 online and they're fabulously reliable and even do a good job of cleaning the floor. Ours has had 8 years of abuse and still works like new. The self-retracting cord even works properly!"There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0

I got rid of my expensive & heavy dyson upright a couple of years ago & replaced it with a Vax upright, which I'm more than happy with. They often have special offers on their website, as do Morphy Richards on their website. You should be able to get something quite decent for less than £75 I'd think.
Also check out Argos, who sell last seasons catalogue stock on Ebay. New stock is added frequently. http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/argos-clearancebargains/The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
we recently got a henry from b and q for £85 iam really pleased with it the suction is great and its really easy to clean corners and the edge of carpets with the reviews on this hoover are great too:)0

We used to have a shop that specialised in vacuum cleaners. We have a Henry at home ( wouldn't even consider any other make), they have good suction but don't wear out the pile on the carpet. They are also very reliable and the best value for money cleaner on the market.
They are also very well made.:D1st Purse £114.19 Monthly GB:rotfl::j:wave::j:rotfl:
2nd Purse ££100Fridge Freezer £300 3rd Purse /£290.940 -
I have had some of the more expensive makes but now would only use a Henry. They are very durable, have very good suction and the parts are very widely available in the unlikely event that something goes wrong. All my family have one now and love them.0

I have a bagless Morphy Richards which cost under £60. I've had it for about 8 years and it's the longest i've ever had a vacuum cleaner - and it's never lost any of it's suction. It comes with a spare washable filter, which is very handy.0

Another vote for Henry:TAKA: PC
