Engagement Ring Nightmare

Hi there,
This is my first post on this site and was hoping someone/anyone can provide me with some advice.
I am having an engagement ring made for my girlfriend and am planning on proposing some time in the next 6 months.
We are due to go on a long trip to Australia and SE Asia for 6 months in few days and i am really struggling to find a company that will insure the ring.
Ive tried home insurance policies (for my parents home as i am not a home owner), but they will only cover for a maximum of 60-90 days. This is what the insurance broker i spoke to recommended.
Ive tried travel insurance, but the maximum single item cover is £500.
Ive tried independent insurance but they will not cover for that amount of time out of the country.
Its increasingly looking like i will have to either leave the ring at home, chance it and go uninsured or propose before we leave and then keep the ring at home. None of these options really appeal.
Any help much appreciated. Thanks

aww thats so sweet :j:j:j
Would you maybe consider getting a cheap ring and bringing that away with you and giving her the proper ring when you get back? That way you can have the lovely proposal with a ring and everything but not have to worry about the expensive ring.
If you were to get a cheap ring go to M&S they have nice sparkly ones for about a tenner. I would prefer to have a cheap ring when travelling myself anyway. (I never bring my engagement ring with me when i go away, theft and loss is my main worry)
hope it all works out!:T0 -
Thanks metalgal.
Thats probably the best option. But i really want to do the proposal with the real ring.0 -
I agree with metalgal - take a fake with you or propose to your girlfriend on your trip and choose a cheap ring/other item together where you propose. You can arrange a get together when you get back home to celebrate with your friends and family and present her with the real item then. All women (and I am one of them) want to show off the ring at the time to their friends etc. If she has already had it a few months the novelty wears off (although she will of course still be madly in love with you and want to marry you)!!.
And she will think it so romantic that you had gone to the trouble of planning and managing to keep a secret - it will make her feel very special!
My OH had a special item made for me for our silver wedding anniversary and I was totally in the dark about it - totally blown away when he gave it to me, and everytime I look at it several years later that special feeling is still there!
I always leave the real jewellery at home when we travel and wear lookalike rubbish, then I can relax and enjoy the holiday without feeling like I am going to be robbed!0
