Post Office insurance... rip off

i got last year post office insurance with accidental damage i have NEVER made a claim before ,i purchased new for old policy and paid in full 1 payment.
2 nights ago i had a slite accident i quietly walked round to my wifes side of the bed to the unit to get the cough medicine bottle, as i piked it up i didnt see the glass of water next to the laptop(it was dark), and i knocked it over, which seeped around near the laptop, i instantly wiped it up and dries the laptop as much as i could and unplugged it from the mains (the power was switched off at the time).
next morning i switched it on and it wont work, so i rang the post office insurance up explained all this to them .......
:mad:shocked to find out my Laptop is not covered (they say it is a portable item and i should have taken out an extra cover for this .......
and they are not going to pay out, so basically i paid accidental cover old for new .for nothing in my opinion, when i queried this they also gave me an example: if you had a fire and it was caused by an (accident) my laptop wouldnt be covered ? but if the fire was not an (accident)i.e Arson etc it would be covered???? They said it is not classed as home entertainment, i tried to explain to them that it is not used as a portable item it is a main computer in my home and it doesnt go out of the house (yes you guessed they dont care?
This clearly to me is a JOKE and anyone who consideres Post office house insurance should really cosider it again in MY opinion, i have never heard such a load of rubbish and get out excuses.... it;s there again insurance company,s way of not paying up.
Basically the accidental damage old for new is a waste of time .. from the post office, because any porable item in that case is not covered . cameras, ipods, camcorders etc??
whats your opinion

I felt royally ripped off with my experience of car insurance with them too.
Got rid of car in August (was paying monthly installments over 12 months). I rang to cancel the insurance to be told I had to pay them a cancellation fee of £25 plus the remainder of the premium! I said "Right well I wont cancel then, just carry on taking my monthly payments til the last one in October" and they said "Sorry, no can do, tough luck". I was furious. I hate insurers, biggest scam going. Who was it who said insurance is a tax on fear?Start Date: 27/11/2010
Padding: Day 42
Target £8000
Amount: £562.230 -
"Our standard "new for old" policy protects your contents against damage by fire, smoke, subsidence, malicious damage, theft, storm, explosion, lightning and flood. It also covers accidental damage to non-portable home entertainment equipment, such as televisions, recording and audio equipment, television games, monitors and printers.
For a small additional cost, you can add the Full Accidental Damage option. This is will cover anything both sudden and unexpected, such as spilling wine on a carpet, or dropping a vase.
Full Accidental Damage cover is not available where children are minded at the property."
10 seconds spent on google finds the above on the Post Office web site.
Please explain how this is a "rip off" and a "joke" when it quite clearly states this before you even get a quote!
As usual, someone doesn't read what they are buying and then throws their toys out the pram when they are not covered.
Let me guess, you bought the policy because it was the cheapest without bothering to check what it actually covered?
No-one to blame here but yourself.

How is your error the fault of the post office insurance?
Basically the accidental damage old for new is a waste of time
You mean new for old. However, ignoring that, around 80% of household claims come under accidental damage. So, its clearly not a waste of time.from the post office, because any porable item in that case is not covered . cameras, ipods, camcorders etc??
whats your opinion
Post office is right and you are wrong. Personal possessions cover is what you should have taken out if you wanted personal possessions like that to be covered.
No rip off occured here. You just bought the wrong level of cover.

No - it's not a rip off. You have had the insurance you paid for.
Clearly it's not what you were expecting. Whether that's because you never read the policy in detail or because you were given duff gen when you took it out or misunderstood what you were told at that time is unclear.
I expect it's false assumptions you made. That doesn't make it a rip off - it just underlines the cardinal rule NEVER ASSUME.0 -

Yet another purchaser of insurance who doesn't read the documentation before paying the money, despite you being asked over and over that you have read and understood all the terms and conditions.
Then come claim time this lack of due diligence suddenly becomes an insurance scam.0 -

NOT a rip off - this is all too common - you buy a policy and you never read the T&C's - I GUARANTEE it is clear in your policy about a lap top but you just assume it is covered. You cannot blame the insurers for your ignorance of the T&C's of the policy you bought.
Your comments are unfair considering it is you who is at fault for not reading what you are signing/accepting.C. (Ex-Pat Brit)
