Help please - inexpensive all in one printer that will print on card

Seeing as my existing printer won't work with Windows 7 (thanks to the manufacturer not creating a driver for it), I'm in the market for a new printer and would like some recommendations please. I need a printer that:

- Is an all in one, as I do occasionally use the scanner
- Doesn't take up too much space
- Prints decent quality photos
- Prints on card (preferably to at least 260 gsm thickness)
- Has relatively inexpensive ink or compatibles (not refills)
- Is preferably around £60, although I'm willing to go up to about £80 if I need to.
- Obviously must work with Windows 7 (with a proper driver, not a 'work around')

After doing some digging, I was going to go for a Brother 195C, but then I remembered my need to print on card (I make greetings cards) and I'm not sure it can handle what I need (spec says it will do up to 220gsm, but I'm not sure that's enough).

I've also been potentially looking at Canon's as I've seen some good reviews of those.

Any recommendations welcome!

  • I've got some card here it's 180gsm.

    Canon's are good though
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

260 gsm is a bit out of the range for most printers...
  • I've not long owned a canon pixma mp270 and its a great all in printer.

I'm not sure how it would deal with card as I've not used anything other than 90gsm or photopaper through it so far, well worth a look though:D
  • Thanks for the all the replies.

I'll check out the Canon you suggest c00kiemonster.
  • Brother all in one printers are the best for value for money especially when the compatible cartridges for them are cheaper thanmost other printers and they are much more reliable and often have 3 years warranty included! they usually range from about £65

The best cartridges i find online are from pcfriend-online(.com) and i get the Genuink brand of cmpatible cartridges. Never had a problem with them.

    Hope this helps.
  • hp all in one printers are pretty cheap. have you considered community maintained print drivers for your old printer, let me know your printer model and i'll take a look.

Thanks. Brother was my first choice for that reason until I realised I needed something to print on card. Most of the ones I've seen say they will print up to 220gsm only though.

Have you tried printing on card on yours? Thanks.

Thanks. The ink for HP printers doesn't seem that cheap though, not compared to some others anyway. Unless you can point me to a good source?

Thanks for the offer of looking for a community maintained driver for me too, but I don't really want a work around (I don't want to risk screwing something up with my new laptop). I'm always a little wary of things like that. Plus I'm kind of looking forward to my new one now - even if it's a pain deciding which one to get!

i haven't tried up to that thickness to be honest but it does state on the Brother website that the DCP 585CW does print on 64-220gsm.

Printed some photos on 6x4 glossy photo paper 240g last night. Worked fine!
