Card cloned

On saturday morning some delightful people in Russia have managed to make two cash withdrawals of £108.70 each and when they tried to make a third one my bank stopped it. I found this out because minutes after this I tried to get some petrol from a morrisons in Rotherham. My bank had already stopped the card and I had to go through a long winded process at the petrol station over the phone to the bank to prove it was me.
Anyhow spoke to the bank today to see what was going on with these clearly fraudulent transactions and they have asked me loads of questions saying have I left my card unattended etc. Fair enough but then at the end they say this is a potentially legal matter as with a visa debit card which cant be cloned and using my pin number it must have been the original card and that I must have misplaced it.
Now this was the first card of its type I've had and I only got it in October, I have never used it online and I always check cash machines for dodgy looking devices and never leave the card unattended in shops. So I have no idea when its been cloned but it has.
Surely the bank can see I was in Rotherham (South Yorkshire, UK - just in case you don't know!!) and therefore couldn't have been in Moscow, Russia at the same time!
Any advice on the matter would be appreciated, I know its not a huge amount but its bothering me none the less - even more so now the bank is somehow suspecting I'm trying to commit some kind of scam.

If you didn't make the transactions, you'll get your money back from the bank plus any charges you incur (e.g. unauthorised overdraft). It can take a few weeks for the bank to sort these things out.0

Well thats what I thought but the bank has said a visa debit card cannot be cloned so it must be somehow my fault. Or were they just trying to scare me off if I had done it.0

Nope, HSBC.0

Can they explain how the card managed to be in Moscow and Rotherham at the same time? As it can't be cloned, is it a super card with the power to travel independantly and return itself to your purse? Honestly, banks make me so mad - obviously it's not possible for the card to be in two places at once, therefore, the people using it in Moscow have some sort of copy!!
Hope you get this resolved - my blood is boiling, and it hasn't even happened to me!!0 -
Well we will see what happens, but if it doesn't get resolved then I will move bank just out of principle. I've been with them for 12 years now and never had any problem like this but if they can't trust me after that time I doubt they ever will.0

They are talking utter rubbish!!
Of course it can be cloned!!!!!!
Or did you fly to Russia and back within a few hours. :rotfl:
Banks are supposed to treat customers fairly now.
What a joke THAT is!!!!(c) Broke in Yorkshire. ( there are worse places )
Those that matter don't mind and those that mind don't matter!0 -
Same thing happened to me, and yes mine was with Abbey. Of course they can be cloned.0
-
Glider why do you ask if this was with Abbey?
I am with Abbey, and seem to be having this right now! I have a joint account with my wife, a couple of weeks ago my card stopped working. I tried ringing and they said due to fraudulent activity, ring back after 1 to get it re-activated. Phoned back after 1, everytime I got through it was as though someone had picked the phone and left it on a desk. Could hear everyone but no-one speaking to me. This happened twice. Phoend next day, was told systems down couldn't do anything. Same next day. Phoned almost a week after and was told that there was an attempt to make a 70 pence transaction in the states. I said it isn't valid. They said ok we'll reject it, your card will be working again in 5 minutes which it was.
Almost 2 weeks later, I log on to the internet banking and discover a transaction for 3 Canadian dollars, with a £1.25 overseas transaction amount. I queried it and was (no surprise here) told of a last of transactions going through which I couldn't yet see which amounted to a total of over £300. Card now been stopped and reissued which I am still waiting for - Surely they should have done this straight away….there is more to this tale which is still ongoing but I'm at work and shouldn't really be on here!!0 -

I have been told a couple of times by banks i cant have my money back from fruad transactions and i have pursued it vigourously and got my dosh.
On the other hand now if more than a couple of internet transactions happen in a day they stop my card and i have to call up to have it unfrozen - this happens about once a month now.
Has anyone else had thses issues?
Are you with Barclays by any chance? Their fraud department doesn't seem to have the balance quite right, going by past threads that have appeared on here (do a search).0
