Can you get a machine that will burn CD's/DVD's,copy cassette tapes to CD, VHS to DVD

Hello

A friend is looking to buy a machine that will do the following:

Burn CD's & DVD's - I know I can do this on my laptop for her but she'd like to buy a machine if one exists? (is it possible to get one where you put the original disc in and then put in the blank disc to burn to?)

Also one where you can copy Cassette tapes to CD's and VHS to DVD's?

Maybe there isn't a machine out there that does this but just thought on you guys and thought I'd ask.

:-)

I was about to list my own writer machne on ebay! Its a 1-7 writer (1 read, 7 write at the same time!). Its looks a bit like a tower PC.

I have removed 3 of the dvd writers so it now only a 1-4 but drives are very cheap! PM if your interested and I will list it on ebay and send you the link.

You can get 1-1 or 1-3 machines also.

If you bought a DVD recorder with HDD you can link your VHS recorder via scart lead and copy the VHS cassettes to the HDD (if they are not copy protected). Then copy from the HDD to a blank DVD. They will also burn CDs.

With DVD you can copy the original to HDD (again if not copy protected) and then to blank DVD.

There are ways to get round copy protection. The simplest is to play the VHS or DVD on your TV as if watching in the normal way with the VHS or DVD player connected to the TV by scart. Connect the DVD/HDD recorder to the other scart on the TV and record what is playing on the screen. Instead of recording BBC1 etc look for options such as AV3 or Line 3 on the input.

In theory, but I haven't actually tried it, you ought to be able to link your audio cassette player to the DVD recorder with appropriate cables and so on.

Only question is, why would you want to? The picture quality on VHS, and sound on cassette, are so inferior to CD/DVD. Why not buy the new format, they're cheap enough? Also consider that the standard 4.7 Gb DVD is only good for 2 hours recording. If your film is longer and lots are, you will need double layer disc blanks. Good ones are £3/5.00 each. What's a new DVD version, £5.00? And you get all the extras.

Obviously, if it's your wedding video, that's another matter.

You can get all in one VHS to DVD/HDD units, but they usually dont copy protected tapes (many later VHS tapes used macrovision for protection), but are ideal for older tapes that are not protected, such as personal recordings.
