Hi I'm connected now with an ethernet cable. For maybe a minute after connecting it was really fast but just the same as before now :/ I changed the channel again too - made no difference.
Excellent (and I do mean excellent) as we are now eliminating known issues: if the machines are clean (and you state they are) then unlikely to be a problem with the laptops (although I don't rule out problems perhaps with configuration settings?). And you might very well be correct about the router itself. Is this a recent problem? Everything working fine before or were things always troublesome from the outset? If you are working with your ISP's technical support on this then, as before, forget about the wireless (in this context) and concentrate on resolving the issue with a wired Ethernet setup.

I need to go out, back later, and I'll have a read - along with everyone else ;)

In addition: very unlikely to be the cause but can you try with a different browser such as Firefox or already done so?

    That's from kitz

The speedtester.bt didn't like my phone number, I put the service ID as NETGEAR (is that right? the SSID?)

Inssider says: "Unable to continue scanning with selected interface. The wireless local area network interface is power down and doesn't support the requested operation"

Normally I use Firefox, I've tried removing addons, I've tried internet explorer as well. I've also removed things from the laptop like & changing virus softwares, clean ups, defrags etc. :/

I've done the thing on the other thread - the auto thing.

It keeps going intermittently fast but I have to wait to keep an eye on it to make sure it's consistent .... I had restarted and reset the router which does sometimes give a faster connection for a short while.

I forgot to mention, it used to be fine but I'd say it's been getting slower and slower over time until now it's so slow so much of the time it's almost unusable :/ In terms of the Xbox, my OH says he used to be able to host in games but can't any more, he also says could the router have been affected when everything got knocked off from lightning?

The ISP aren't doing anything for now, we have to do the steps they ask including a new router (or borrowed) and only then will they send an engineer although I don't know what they'll do :/

    Hi catz

bt speedtest should work unless it is very busy, did you click yes when it says.......Please choose Yes below to confirm that you have followed the above mentioned instructions

You don't need the service ID, just leave that blank.
    JUst enter your phone number.
The next page that will come up will be to ask you for your broadband user connection name, note that your broadband connection user name will be found in your router admin details.

PS. Is your phone line with BT?

    Hi,

No we don't have BT round here, only Kingston Communications :/ we can't even change ISP unless we get mobile broadband :(

I spotted something on the net - someone with a similar problem but I think it only happened to 1 device but basically he changed the speed duplex setting or something but I can't even find that within the device manager to change it? :/

Just did these speed tests & got these results:

    Date 08/09/09 19:16:56
    Speed Down 293.84 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
    Speed Up 378.12 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps ) Port 8095
    Server speedtest1.thinkbroadband.com

Don't know what this all means though except that it's slow & inconsistent :/

OK well, tech man has been & said that our signal - noise ratio wasn't good so that's been rectified. Also we're on old internet, not sure what that means but he said we aren't on ADSL 2 as we've had our internet a long time (something about being on old broadband - began with G)

They've just brought out some new packages (our ISP) so might be worth changing to one of those to bring us up to date.

So far so good - it working as fast as my laptop & router allow (We tried a pals router which was faster but didn't solve the problem so we may get a newer router anyway - especially for the Xbox gaming [what I mean it was faster when the internet was working well and a bit faster when the internet wasn't working well).

Thanks everyone who came on to help :)

Oh & they couldn't understand why we weren't capped so they capped us at 5GB to make the browsing better - I think that's what has made the difference.

 the improved situation was short lived & the internet is absolutely dire :(
Sites like this I can only have 1 tab may 2 open before it can't cope. I rang them again & they said they had capped it at 5.7 before & have now capped it at 5.1

They said I might be better off on ADSL 2+ (ie their new packages they brought out on 22nd Feb) .... at least it's the same price & my modem is compatible but I have to wait 10 days for it to activate & to see if it's any good & in the mean time trog along excrutiatingly slowly :(

06/03 - rang them again, man said he couldn't see a problem, we had good speeds all morning (?!), man presses reset at their end - works great so far so good!
