I'm really hoping the ex doesn't still have a phone or any line of credit open in his name.... anything she got him to setup in his name and sign for he will as you say have been lumbered with but anything he didn't sign for / she forged his signature on / she gave his details for online etc he might be able to contest..
other than that the advice about scouring credit records to work out exactly what is/might still be open and or owed is good advice0 -
I think the best thing he can do is contact all three of the credit agencies mentioned above- template letters on the site somwehere (£2 each). He needs to open all letters he has recieved and get a good idea of what debt there is. Then obviously as someone said earlier to check if any of these accounts are still open and get them all closed and shut down immediately if possible.
Once he has an accurate view of what is owed and to whom, he can start sorting things out.
Getting his credit reports isn't going to harm him in anyway, yes giving his previous addresses as well as his current one will then link him to those addresses and then the debts will find him, but I think in the long run its better to know exactly whats going on and then make a plan to go on from here.
hope that helps.Debt free as of 2 October 2009

            Hi Wanttobefree
Firstly good luck with all of this and i'm sure your partner really appreciates your support on this
The first thing i would be looking to do is to get a copy of his credit report - this can be done online with and is easy enough to understand. This will at least give yous a starting point to knowing what debts are outstanding and which have been settled.this will give yous the upper hand when dealing with the companys.
Let us know when you have done this and we can see about helping further

I would also get some advice from the police as if she is still running credit up in his name its fraud.0

Hi! Did'nt want to read and run but wanted to offer support and good wishes that you and your partner will get through this.
It's seems that your OH has been through a lot with depression and so on and seems that his ex has taken advantage of this.
But he really needs to stand up and say enough is enough!!
This woman has bled him dry and continues to do so because he allows her to. He sounds very much like a gentle man who will do anything for a quiet life to the detriment of his own health and wealth!
He needs to look at these bills and regard them as bits of paper!! Yes they are asking for money - but he then needs to decide when he left this woman and at that point in his mind make the decision that he will not pay any further bills from that time onwards and make that known to the debt collectors and this woman.
If she has been obtaining further credit in his name then he must stand up and say this is fraud and drop her in it. Let her deal with it!! It is not his debt and if she has been obtaining credit in his name then it becomes a criminal matter.
As others have said find out what debts are actually outstanding in his name from Experian or whoever. These have quite specific information as to when they were started and will make it much easier for you and him to decide what he could actually be responsible for and he can deal with a greatly reduced debt load.
Unfortunately council tax is probably the hardest one to deal with - but if he is/was liable from the dates indicated then he will have to pay them. But he does need to make sure that he has declared that he has not been resident there since whatever date and if he can prove it by whatever means show this proof. I'm not saying that he will be off the hook but at least he will be standing up and saying I WAS NOT THERE!!
Good luck

Thank you all for your advice. Will be telling him it all and showing him this when he wakes up, he's been on nights.
I don't think she is still racking up debts in his name as she has her new guy and she's bleeding him dry at the moment.
All the debts are ones from the years when they were together that he never knew about, the mobile is gone and hopefully as he's paid that one in full that's one less to deal with, but the others that are left are quite big ones, it would be best i know to do that credit check and see everything laid out in front of you so there are no more nasty surprises but it's just the giving the address thing that might put him off, as then every single debt she made for him will find him all at once. He's already paid thousands and thousands back and he really thought it was all over, now i don't think he thinks it will ever end.
I have some money saved up for something i was going to buy but i'm going to give it him later on for the council tax one as them are the letters at the moment that are threatening to come round and take things.
Do you think that he should email the council tax debt recovery people later on and say he will pay?
I wouldn't mind but we are both so careful with money and all this isn't even owed for anything either of us bought or anything. She did take full advantage of him and he is a generous man it makes me sick to think of it all and her out there living the life of riley with this new one she's taking to the cleaners without a care in the world of how 5 years on she is still ruling his life.0 -
What *exactly* do the letters regarding council tax say, and who *exactly* are they from?If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0

            hey hun,
i was in a similar situation, my ex had all sorts of credit in my name, i ran away from it.
last year i looked at my credit report, i found out details of everything.
some dates did not match and i could prove that i did not live there at that time, that wiped £2000 of debt.
i then went through the process of sending of cca requests for all debts that i had been contacted about, 3 could not be provided and as they had already defaulted against me i told them where to go. saving me £1500
another cca i recieved had a fraudulent sig on it, that is now in the hands of the police. that has saved me paying £1000
there were two other entries on there, one has dissapeared as it became statute barred and the other became statute barred last month, i left it alone until they contacted me, they didnt and now they cant.
most of these debts i have paid towards for about 4 years, when i became ill and was singed off of work i had to look into ways of sorting things out.
there is no point in burying his head in the sand.
it really is gut wrenching when you look at the damage, but is has to be done.
he also need to disassociate him self from her financially, he can do this via the credit ref agancy.
i have paid a ridiculas amount of this debt over the years, which has severly affected my life and that of my children and new husband.
so sooner you sort it out the sooner things can get better x0 -
They are the council. Bailiff Warning Notices.
There are three yellow pages stapled together, each was issued on the same day they each have a council tax cost box then a total due, they all say on each that in 2002 2003 and 2004 liability orders were granted by the council. But we never even had a notice that the first one had happened.
The first one it says in a box council tax and costs then added together in a total box, over 500 is the first, the second over 800 and then the last confuses me, as it says the council tax is 890 costs 50 but then in the total box its got 400? I'm the first to admit im not the best with figures and financial things.0
