    I'd go for grovelling apology longstanding customer give me my money back etc etc BUT also ask why cheque paid.They don't like customers to know they never check anything under about £500...

    Try £5,000 or even £10,000 in some banks. The cost for rectifying mistakes or fraud is far lower than the cost would be for checking every signature on every cheque.

    It takes long enough for cheques to become available without the extra work and time involved in checking the signatures.
