Long vertical crack in brickwork - any experience of this?

Does anyone have any experience of vertical cracking in brickwork where the house joins an extension? It's about a quarter of an inch to a half an inch wide in a Victorian property that I'm thinking of buying. So before I get a survey any advice most welcome. Thanks!

half an inch wide all the way down doesnt sound too good at all.
sounds like the extension slab is settling away from the house.
get some expert advice or leave well alone. theres plenty more fish in the sea.
    Get some gorm.
  • I agree, that's quite a big crack. I'm no builder but maybe the extension foundations aren't strong enough and it is sinking. Alternatively it may just have settled a little and may never move again.

Either way I'd get a competent builder to check it out, possibly get a structural check on the foundations.
