Sony TV is cream crackered

Hello,
O/H and I are having a disagreement as to how to proceed on this one.
2.5 year old TV looks like this:

No warranty now, natch.
I've been told this by someone I believe to be knowledgeable about such things:
'That's a failure of either the TCON or the LCD panel, and Sony usually integrates the TCON board into the LCD panel.
Unfortunately, that means your LCD panel has failed, and the cost to replace the LCD panel is actually more than the cost of a new TV.'
...who also believes that I should be able to get some kind of assistance from Sony, or perhaps even a replacement, seeing as it's become beyond economical repair in just 2.5 years.
So I rang Sony, explained the problem, was polite. They suggested I took it to an authorised TV repair place and gave me the details of a place 2 miles away. (It doesn't sound like far, but I can't drive, so it's O/H who has to be persuaded)
My view: it's worth paying £35 to have the problem properly diagnosed, and documented, and be armed with info to take to Sony, who MAY then make amends for their shoddy item.
His view: it's not worth £35 and at least one 2 mile drive to diagnose a knackered TV which is only fit for the bin.
Has anyone had any similar dealings with Sony, and fancy our chances?
TIA...

Good luck. I've got the 40" version that's recently started switching itself off for a few seconds so I'm half expecting the vertical lines too now.Herman - MP for all!

Email sent, as I read of one person who got good results from the retailer in question by emailling them.
Wish me luck!My TV is broken!

Did you by chance buy it from John Lewis?, all of their TV's have a 5 year warranty.
