Are you confident in doing it, go to start --run--type msconfig in the box and press enter, click on services tab and theres a list of what starts on startup so i believe and just untick what you dont want to run on startup. What OS is it ? you say its old so is the OS pre XP, have a read of this and select your OS0

Or Startup Inspector is very good. http://www.windowsstartup.com/startupinspector.php0

Best results would be from reinstalling the OS and starting afresh

I would recommend CCleaner (it's free) it makes it really easy to clean up your computer and start up programs.0
