  • Provisional licences are valid until you are 70 its only the photo that expires after ten years. therefore he should just be able to obtain a replacement licence.

My daughter applied for a provisional driving licence 15 years ago, she never took her test!
A month ago she applied for a new provisional licence, on the form it asks if you have ever had a prov. licence before. She sent of the by now very dog eared COPY of the first provisional licence, and enclosed the £50 fee. Imagine her delight when she got her new licence together with a refund of £30!!!!

  • As mentioned above, your entitlement remains until you are 70, but the new licences require to be renewed every 10 years. Having said that, you're only looking for a replacement. And if your OH can remember their driver number, then so much the better :) (although if they're hitting 40, I'd doubt it ;) )

He will need his license to show the driving instructor and driving examiner on a test anyway, so will need to buy a photo driving license.

It is not necessary to change to a photo card licence before taking and passing your test if you have a valid passport, a driving instructor and the test centre will accept them as identity, when the test is passed you will be issued with a new photo card licence.

Yes I did exactly this. Although OP says paper license is lost, and the DVLA won't send out anything other than a photo one to replace the lost one. Seems from a post above that in these circumstances the replacement license fee still applies as opposed to the full license fee.

If the licence is lost or they do not have a valid passport then obviously they will need to get a new one which would be a photo card, but for the sake of clarity to anyone with an old paper licence they can take their passport.

Oh and by the way it is a licence not a license.:D

"Valid for two years" sounds like the old provisional motorcycle entitlement. Did he have a provisional car and bike licence?

Ah - that could explain it!

    Thanks all for your help.

OH phoned DVLA yesterday evening and he has indeed only got to apply for a replacement, rather than a new first, so he has only got to pay £20 rather than £50. Luckily OH has a fairly unusual surname - only a handful in the whole country - so I imagine he was fairly easy to trace! For ID purposes he has only got to put his passport number on the application form (lucky he has got one then!) so that is nice and easy!
