what happens when i've been given notice to leave?

Short story, ex decided to up and leave, left me with all the household bills (which im sorting)
Let rental agents know, then got 2 months notice in writing, all above board ect... to leave 14th August
Cant afford to rent private, have a 11 year old daughter, I work.

Spoke to council housing, said until 28 days till homeless nothing will be done, I am on list, so it will be 28 days this Monday I have to leave, does that mean I will be homeless on the 14th or do i have to wait until they go to court to evict me?
I have paid all the rent, tho now I wont be able to because ive run up my overdraft so much, but ive paid rent for the period im *officailly in the house*

Any advice would be great, why is it the good guys always get the crap!!!

Dont know, didnt ask, no point asking, because i'll just get upset and angry again, and i've moved on and concentration on the future!
But maybe we rented the house a year ago now they could prob get £100 month more for it now, maybe because im the *single mum syndrome*
    (put working in there please)
They sent me a nice letter with the notice saying its nothing against me I have been a solid tenant, kept the house perfect, paid rent ect...
they have shot them selfs in the foot, because I would have carried on paying rent even if it ment living on baked beans, but they would have ogt the rent!
But now they have got to go to court, evict me, lose money, just seems stupid, but hey there you go....

    PLay this carefully.

As I understand it and DO CHECK WITH SHELTER that you may not be classed as homeless until you have been formally evicted. So sit tight, dont pay your LL anything, and wait for the court order to come through.

Sadly this is crap for your LL, but a legal & occupational hazard as the council wont house you ( certainly they wont where I work) until you have been formally evicted.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Can they just turn up on my doostep?
Can they just send ma a letter saying they are coming round on so and so date to do check ect...

When the notice is up, you DO NOT have to leave, and SHOULD NOT leave. They have to get a court order. Sorry, it is going to be stressful for you, but if you leave before you get the court order, your local council may not house you, as you will be officially 'intentionally homeless'. Some councils take a more enlightened view and will house you before then, but that is the strict letter of the law.

In the meantime, have you applied for housing benefit? It is in your interest to continue paying the rent for as long as you live there, for two reasons - firstly the court can order you to pay rent for the period that you 'overstayed your welcome' and this would leave you with a lump sum of back dated rent to find. Secondly, if you go to the council with a history of rent arrears, it may affect their dealings towards you.

At least if you get HB, you will have some help towards the rent while you are there. Also, have you applied for working tax credit?

    Good luck
