"Do not cook any dishes on the base of your oven.

We've always previously cooked an extra dish (crumble, etc) on the base of our oven whilst something else was cooking but the instructions for our new Electric fan Neff oven say that nothing should be cooked in that location and tins/pans should not be stored on the base of it.
Can anybody explain why this should be and whether the oven will be damaged if we ignore the instruction because it doesn't seem very fuel-economic to ignore this space to cook an extra dish when the oven is switched on.

I have no idea why this is but i haven`t ever used the floor of the oven.
Maybe as it is directly near ignition/flame?
IF you have aleays dont it then continue, as with most things they use a caution to cover themselves.

  • My mum uses the base, but puts a dripping tray there so the dish isn't directly on the base IYSWIM.

If you put things on the base of the oven they burn. It gets really hot as there's a heating element under it. You can use it though if you have any other random wire tray you can use (e.g. one out of your microwave set, grill pan ... whatever fits), just to get the item off the oven base.
