Text won't overtype when I select it in Word/Outlook

You know how when you drag your mouse over some text you've already typed (so the text is highlighted), and then it gets deleted if you start typing again? Well basically my work computer has stopped doing that - it just jumps to the beginning of the passage, so I either have to use the Cut function or press the backspace button. Pressing Overtype doesn't fix it and it works fine in other programmes like content management systems.

Anyone know if there's a way to fix this and if so how do I do it please?

Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")
Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")
