Jamaica - Trips and best way to book?

Hi

I was wondering if anyone had been to Jamaica and could recommend companies to book trips through, as we don't want to book through tour operator..

We'd look to go to Dunn's River.. is there anywhere else we should definately do, will be in the Montego Bay area...

Thanks in advance

I took my son and neice to jamaica around 2 years ago we stayed at the Starfish trewlawny hotel in falmouth montego bay area all our tours/trips we booked through our hotel rep
(something that generally i would never do but there was no where nearby that you could book anything falmouth was a bit out of the way)

Dunns River Falls & Park is a great trip to do, although me and my niece gave up half way through and got out and walked up the path its worth doing The guides were great really good fun and really made the trip a good laugh. Most of the guided trips up the falls are fairly large groups (>20 people). You all hold hands like a bunch of naughty school kids :D so if one person falls, several others go down as well They filmed a dvd of everyone going up the falls falling in ect and if they do this on your trip then def get it as its a good laugh to watch when you get home

We also swimming with the dolphins at Dolphin Cove http://www.dolphincovejamaica.com/which is quite a nice place not to built up and it was pretty quiet when we went there in april i think you can go there even if you are not swimming with the dolphins
we did it as part of a trip to a plantation house where we had lunch

Also went horseriding for the afternoon, the horses had names like ganja boy, weedit, spliff, marley golden eye rastaman ect and we got to ride them in the river which was fun as long as you dont fall off
went to furn gully which was a waste of time unless you like tropical plants

Oh yeah and i hope you like Bob Marley, from the moment we arrived till the day we left i dont think i heard any other music apart from Bob Marley
Didnt matter where you were, on the coach, in the resturant, by the pool in the taxi ect ect Bob was being played everywhere

When we were in Jamaica a few years ago we just hired a mini bus and driver for the day and he took us wherever we wanted. He picked us up at the hotel at 7am and dropped us back about 8pm. If I remember it was about $150 and we bought his food which cost us nothing hardly. Reception should be able to recomend someone.

We did similar to NJW69, and hired a cabbie for the day whenever we wanted to go out. He was great, knew all the great local eateries and was a great guide.

It was slow at times, as he would pick up his mates along the way, but all part of the way they live.
  • If you go to www.cruisecritic.co.uk and have a look through their forums namely the "Ports Of Call section" (choose Carribean - Jamaica) you will find loads of info on recommended trips, Dunns River, White Water Rafting, Tubeing, Horse Riding etc etc, restaurants, things to take, We went to Jamaica when we were on a cruise and have to say Cruise Critic was invaluable.

Think you may have to sign up/log on but it only takes a couple of minutes its part of the Tripadvisor group which you could also have a look at.
My mind tends to wander............If found please return;)

We do it the expensive way and book at the hotel:eek: I would say that tubing is brilliant. We always go horse-riding in the caribbean as well and the guides for both are fantastic!

I've done this before too teallach but don't want to do this again as I find you get exactly the same trips in some cases but are paying much more!
