Immersion Problems
Options
I have justed moved into a 2 bed cottage and was delighted to hear when looking at it that it was an eco house, only to discover it is not. We have just rec'd an electricity bill for £600 a quarter (nov-feb). After having the landlords and an electrician round we have discovered that the hot water doesn't run through the boiler but on an immersion. The landlords where not sure how the timer works for the immersion and after sitting down and working it out realised it had been on loads of different programmes - some without shut off times. Are the landlords liable for some of the costs as they were not sure how it works so did not show us or inform of the immersion rather than the boiler in the first place? Please help!!

Welcome to the forum.
By boiler, I assume you mean a gas boiler?
Do you know if it is a combi boiler; These are designed to provide hot water on demand and not have a hot water tank; although they can heat a hot water tank.
Having your hot water heated by an immersion heater will obviously be expensive(about 3 times more than gas). However it would only be responsible for a small part of that £600 bill even left on 24/7.
You might get a goodwill payment from your landlord - but it isn't his responsibility as such.
I would check your bill and see if the initial meter reading is the same a the one you took when you moved in.0
