OK so I now I have sygate. Occasionally I get a littlle warning so I click on the icon and I get this grid window with all the accessing attempts logged, and it tells me that somebody is scanning my computer!!!
 Does this mean that this somebody is scanning but cannot get in, or what?

Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

Probably, but it could just be internet noise, peer to peer clients trying to connect to your IP (which belonged to someone else half an hour ago). If you get contant attacks from one ip, and the port number increments every time, it may be a port scanner.
I wouldn't worry about it, it's normal. The firewall is doing it's job.. Turn off alerts or get a router (if you are on broadband), and they will go away.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
