Help buying a laptop for my husband

Hi,

I would like to buy a laptop for OH but am not technical in the slightest. can anyone recommend something between £350-450

to be used for gaming, storing photos, internet and word processing

You'll struggle to get a gaming laptop for that budget. What sort of games does he play?

No problem for virtually any laptop.

Gaming, though is another issue altogether, much more demanding in terms of processor, graphics and memory. Other than for fairly undemanding games, you are unlikely to find a decent gaming laptop (if there is such a thing) in your price range.

Yeah you can get laptops for that price range for everything bar gaming that you mentioned but if he plays games that are 4 years old or more than some may be okay.

To play modern games on a laptop you are looking at paying £800-£1500.

Overclockers UK have a few gaming laptops that are capable of playing the newest games but they do come at a cost as they would anywhere.

To be honest if he wants to play modern games then a desktop is a far better option than a laptop unless the portability is absolutely critical.

aaah - I have no clue what games he wants to play - usually stuff off the internet and he always says he can't play them on my laptop (IBM thinkpad). That being said we have bought a wii now so maybe thats satisifed the gaming urge.

There is no chance of £800....450 was the tops but I was hoping for under 400. The main reasonfor the purchase is he's starting a degree course so will need it for that also needs to store our photos as this laptop is really on last legs and generally just surfing the net.....I suppose gaming comes last on the list (well my list anyway!!!)

any suggestions for the above but without the gaming options?

lemon your never going to get everything you listed for 400-450. The cheapest will be around £500-£550..

The graphics card with that is possible to play some newish games at a lowish resolution I would expect but it is over budget unfortunately. The ones below that from Dell are either a Celeron or a Intel dual core which are not core2duo - these two are slower than the I3 core.

When you 'stuff off the internet' do you mean he is just playing games in a web browser? If that is the case then any modern laptop within you're budget should be abel to cope.

to be fair it is possible to get a great machine closer to £600 (400 though is very unlikely) which could be specced similarly to those on sale for over 1k
