Elec Meter Serial Number

Options
Hi folks. I've recently moved to a new build house, and the developers sorted out the transfer of the supplier over to our name.

I registered online for the elec billing, and the address on my online account was updated as an address in Gloucester, and I live in Scotland. So I phoned to get that updated.

I've now had my first elec bill, and the start meter reading is miles out. It's showing 00080 and the meter was already reading in 33xxx when it was installed, and the opening meter reading the developer took was close to this. I also noticed that the tariff I'm on is for the Midlands.

So I tried to check the serial number to make sure it's right. On the bill it shows a 6 figure serial number. But I can't see anything like this on the meter.

There's a long number in along the front above a bar code. Is this, or part of it, the serial number?

  • Sounds like theres a few things that could be wrong there.

Is it a new build or refurbished/converted. If new build then I would expect the meter to be new, in which case the serial number would look something like this....A12B123456. It is possible that an older meter has been fitted but they tend to have 7-digit numbers.

If your address has been changed to Gloucester instead of Scotland it could well be that the MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) for the address has been set up wrong, an MPAN in Scotland should begin with 18 (Scot Power region) or 17 (Scot Hydro region). The MPAN is a 13 digit number. It is possible that the developer has given the supplier a wrong MPAN, which just happens to have an address and meter in Gloucester, or it was the billing address of the developer.

If the developer has built a number of houses or flats check back with them to make sure you have the plot number as well as your house number...these often differ and can cause mayhem with meters being matched to the correct property (i.e. you live in number 6, but the builders have it as plot 44, and the nice people at no 44 are paying for your meter).

So, check your meter Ser No, the MPAN on the bill, and get in touch with your supplier to get it sorted...if you mention who your supplier is there may be someone on the forum who can help as theres a lot of call centre folk on here.

This ceased to be true several years ago. All the MPAN tells you is which distribution network you are connected to and who the MPAS is. Distributors are now free to build networks anywhere they want and there are also 4 new ones.
