NAS Drives

Hi all,

I'm looking into getting a NAS drive so that i can back up my machines automatically (& without unplugging and moving my current USB drive around).

Ones that I have looked at (so far) are the Netgear RND2000 (enclosure only) and the Cisco/Linksys nmh410. Out of those two, the netgear seems to be winning at the moment purely because of the Rsync functionality.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for NAS drives/NAS enclosures?

If it helps, I'd like it to have:
  • 2 drive bays (with support for 2 x 1TB drives)
  • rsync functionality
  • raid 1 (for mirroring)

I know I can build another box and freenas it (or stick debian lenny on it), but I already have one machine on pretty much 24/7 and wouldn't like to have another machine switched on 24/7.

TIA :)

I have a readynas nv+ at work that i use as an over flow device for server images, its a little bigger than the box your looking at but i assume the functionality is the same.

A couple of months back i upgraded it to 4* 2TB drives which really was the simplest thing to do, just put the drives in one at a time, let it do its stuff and at the end loads more space and all the existing files are present! oh and it emails me if there are drive problems.

    Very impressed with it.

  • all depends how much you want to pay for a NAS drive. I have tried all the cheaper options and they were very poor. In the end I went for a synology NAS. Its been running for over a year with no problems and has never been turned off. Works with all version of windows no probs.

I've heard some good things about the Seagate BlackArmour (an it's various incarnations), but it's a little difficult to set up according to reviews. I've been after a "RAID storage solution" too, (not necessary NAS, but is an option for me) and this is one I am considering which may suit you.

I'm sure you'll make the right choice over this but caution over using Vista and NAS drives is needed. The security policy will need editing on the Vista (manually in the registry) if you have home version. I expect that this applies to Windows 7 as well, but I've not had to access the drive using this yet. They don't tell you this in the manuals.

I use a Maxtor Shared Storage drive for NAS, nice and easy to use, nifty USB port for other drives on it as well. Mind you, I'm not fussy!

Thanks for the warning about that. I guess I'll be doing some registry editing then seeing as i'll be backing up a Vista home premium machine (and probably a Win7 Home Premium laptop) as well as all my Linux machines.
