Have spent money in my account which turns out to be a fraudulent payment!!!

Hello can someone please give me some advice as to where I stand?
HSBC have frozen my bank account because a fraud marker has come up on my account for a sum of money which was paid into my account as payment for some sales/marketing work I did. I have never worked for this company before but have recently been out of work and really needed the money so undertook the work as an independent contractor with them.
Since this has arisen I have tried to contact the company I did the sales/marketing literature for and cannot get hold of them or they are not getting back to me.
I have spent the money that was paid to me and just want to know where I stand in all of this before I go in and speak with HSBC, but for now my account and cards are frozen.
I have no problems about shopping the company in although I just feel I have been scammed and all I have to show for it is the work I completed for the company and the invoice I sent them.

I am so confused by this post.
You did come contracting work for some random company.
Random company paid money into your account.
HSBC stopped you account.
You spent (or had done already) the money.
How would there be a 'scam' involved? The company paid you money didn't they?0 -
It does make sense, sort of. Was the money paid to you by cheque? I've heard of that scam before.
If not, then its a new one on me.
You can pursue it with your bank but you may still be liable for payment.0 -
Maybe the company paid the OP from a bank account they did not own/was not in their name and now the correct named holder has found out?I beep for Robins - Beep Beep

That is it Ben, HSBC are saying that the money they paid me with for the work was a fradulent electronic transfer which I am presuming is not their account. I have been trying to get hold of the person who I was dealing with at this company and now can't get hold of him at all, miraculously!!! I just don't know what he is gaining from this apart from my bank account details and personal information that was on the invoice I sent him.
I'm obviously now sure he doesn't even work for this company.
I just wanted some advice to see if anyone had experienced anything like this before to know where I stand speaking with HSBC. Thanks for your comments.0 -
Unfortunately, it's most likely a scam. Most often, fraudsters will use stolen credit card information to pay for posting their job opportunities on legitimate sites, or pay the people they hire to do a particular job for them.
I suggest you go to your bank and deal with it. You may be liable for the money spent since it is fraudulent.
Also, if you have provided your bank account details to that person, you have to be careful now as they may use those information to scam you further. And they may also sell your information to a third party for profit. There are a lot of things that a fraudster can do once they've gotten involved with you. So please be careful.Mr. Mulla0
