will credit card companies stop applying interest if you ask them?
Yes, you are....when you say that a 0% card is not an option, have you checked you credit report recently to see what is on there? Even if you cant get a 0% deal you might be able to get a card with either a LOB deal or one with a rate around the 16%/18%, it is still better than the 27.9% on citicard.
I'm not sure - at one point I owed 37k to various companies - late payments, passed to debt collectors etc - over a period of 3 years, i still owe hsbc 15k and paying that off so doubt my credit report is favourable.

It is always good to check your credit report from time to time just to make sure that the right information are on it. Experian & Equifax both offer 1 month free trial but as long as you cancel within the month.
I'd say it is defo worth contacting their customer services and advising them of your situation - advise them that you can no longer afford the repayments and ask for their help. They tend to help those who are overdue paying them and they have the discretion to freeze the interest (not saying that this is what you should do btw however, if this applys to you then it's worth a shot)
